Adult Technology Education Curriculum Outline
Week 1 – Computer Basics
This course will focus on the basics of operating the Microsoft Windows XP Operating System. By the end of the course, students will be comfortable creating files and directories, organizing in a structure that is comfortable and intuitive for them. Here is an overview of what we will cover:
Day 1 : Discovering Computers and Windows Basics : This course will cover operating a mouse, keyboard and learn how to browse the start menu and browse for software on the computer. Students will learn how to do the following:

Basic typing overview

Understand how the file system works

Create a text file inside “My Documents”

Browse the start menu and find the programs that they are looking for 2. Day 2: System Maintenance: This course will cover basic operating system maintenance: Students will learn how to do the following
a. Run the disk scan tool
b. Understand the disk defragmenter and running it

Understand spyware and running the spyware scan

Day 3: Browsing the Internet : This course will cover how to browse the Internet using Internet Explorer. Students will learn how to do the following:
Use the address bar to manually type in an internet address

Use bookmarks and save their favorite website
-
Day 4: Discovering Outlook: Students will learn to use the basics of Outlook:

Setting up email accounts
-
Sending and receiving emails
-
Sending files and pictures through email
-
Setting up a contact list and calender
-
Day 5: Wrap up project: This course will guide students through the daily tasks that are performed in an office environment. This wrap-up project combines the abilities above.
Week 2 – Office Administration
This course will focus on students learning how to operate basic office tasks such as running Microsoft Office Suite (XP/2003). After completion, students will feel comfortable in a typical office setting in various positions: Office Administrator, Administrative Assistant, HR positions and many other types of clerical positions. The following things will be covered:
Microsoft Word

Day 1 : Discovering Microsoft Word : This course will cover basic functions of word:

Creating and saving a new document

Understanding and utilizing the toolbar to format and manipulate fonts and paragraphs

Printing the document

Day 2 : Basic Word : In this course students will learn how to:

Use paragraph formatting tools such as indenting and spacing

Use page layout with margins and page setup

Use spell-check and wordcount tools

Day 3 : Mastering Word : In this course students will learn how to:

Create and manipulate tables

Use basic macros
-
Import data from excel
-
Create and format a report
-
Day 4 : Basic Web Design : In this course students will take an existing report in word, save it as a web page, preview it in the browser, and learn how to :

Format a word document for the web

Publish the webpage and view it in the browser

Day 5 : Basic Office Skills : In this course students will learn how to:

Create a template
-
Create an unordered and ordered list
-
Build an outline to hand out to employees
Week 3 – Microsoft Excel

Day 1 : Discovering Microsoft Excel : This course will cover basic functions for excel:

Understanding rows and columns

Cell formatting

Basic calculations

Understanding the toolbar

Day 2 : Basic Excel: Students will learn how to:

Create reports

Create formulas
-
Create simple graphs
-
Day 3 : Mastering Excel I: Students will learn how to:

Intermediate formulas

Analyze and review data

Day 4 : Mastering Excel II : Students will learn how to:

Aggregate data

Research external sources for data and import it into excel

Day 5 : Putting it all together : Students will take all their completed projects and put them together into a full worksheet. This wrap-up project worksheet will go over the following things:

Week 4 – Microsoft Access

Day 1 : Discovering Microsoft Access : This course will introduce students to the basic concepts of databases and their common uses.

Understanding Data types

Creating tables
-
Sorting and formatting tables

Understanding rows and columns in databases
Day 2 : Basic Access : Students will learn how to:

Create a database based on a real life model
-
Learn how to create basic queries
-
How to output a table to a report
-
Day 3 : Data Manipulation with Access : Students will learn how to:
Put together queries based on human questions

Create “conditions” in queries
-
Learn how to output a query to a report
Day 4 : Forms in Access : Students will learn how to:

Create a data entry form based on a table

Work with and understand form elements

Create a splash page
-
Day 5 : Putting it all together : Students will take all their completed assignments through the week and create an access program that can be used in a restaurant for managing recipes. In this final project they will learn the following things:

Week 5 – Microsoft PowerPoint

Day 1 : Discovering Microsoft PowerPoint : This course will introduce students the basic concepts of putting together presentations in PowerPoint. The will be introduced to the following things:
Slides

Drawing tools

Fonts and typography
-
Shape tools
Day 2 : Basic PowerPoint : Students will learn how to:

Create a basic slideshow based on a template

Use basic graphic effects
-
Import images for other programs
-
Apply a background image or color
Day 3 : Intermediate PowerPoint : Students will learn how to:

Add in a chart from excel
-
Add in links from a website
-
Play and review their slideshow
-
Day 4 : Advanced PowerPoint : Students will learn how to :

Insert in a table

Add in sound to their presentation

Make their presentation

Day 5 : Putting it all together : Students will compile all their assignments from previous days and create a full blown presentation
Creating slide notes

Change the color scheme/theme of presentation

Copy all assignment to a CD/Create a digital portfolio on a CD

Receive Certificates of completion for the classes

Day 4: Integration: Students will learn how to:

Import results from the previous excel assignments

Import results from the previous access assignments

Format the data in PowerPoint and prep it for their presentation
